TESTIMONIALS

“Strong intention, a relaxed body and an open mind are the main ingredients for an active birth."-Janet Balaskas

“When my husband and I first met Alana, we were struck by her compassionate approach to her work and her thoughtful responses to all our questions. We immediately knew that she had the sort of vibe and presence that we wanted during the delivery of our son. During each prenatal session, Alana patiently explained each topic and made sure we understood all the important concepts (I didn't do a ton of research on my own, so I definitely needed some repetition to remember things!) She listened closely to what we wanted for the birth and made sure we felt good about the choices we were making. There was never any judgment or pushing for a certain way to do things. Alana's laid back personality and sense of humor made the prenatal sessions fun and not at all stressful.

I wanted a natural childbirth with no epidural, and Alana's guidance made that possible in multiple ways. I labored at home for as long as I could with my husband's support and Alana checking in by phone. She met us at the hospital in the middle of the night and was attentive throughout my labor--cooling off my face with a mini fan, asking for a birthing ball, helping me get into different labor positions, getting me water and encouraging me to actually drink it, despite my nausea. I was in a daze so I'm sure I don't remember every helpful thing she did! I do remember laughing with my husband and Alana when I felt rather loopy from nitrous oxide. Alana also took pictures and videos when Liam finally made his arrival, and stayed a few hours afterward to keep helping out.

We are so grateful for Alana's support before, during, and after the birth of our son. She made us feel confident that no matter what happened, we could make informed decisions and deal with whatever came up. If you are looking for a doula, we cannot recommend Alana more highly!”

“Working with Alana was absolutely one of the best things that happened for our family of two-soon-to-be-three in the last year. Not knowing a lot about doulas, but knowing we'd want guidance and reassurance and support, we chose Alana based on the feeling of "who would you want next to you when things get really hard?" And it turned out we were right. Our pregnancy, like all, had its unique challenges and trying moments and through it all Alana was a calming source of focus and strength. From helping us to navigate the hospital system to providing hands-on soothing during the deepest parts of labor, she was devoted to our journey.

But to rewind a bit... long before that 50+ hour stretch (during which I had to insist that Alana sleep a bit), she was a highly organized, informative and empowering person to plan our birth with. Our prenatal sessions covered all the various factors you'd want to discuss and outline ahead of a hospital birth, which our health care provider didn't always present all sides of. We are so grateful to her for helping us feel included in the hospital birth process. Having gone through a hospital birth I feel that without some proactive planning and someone to help you advocate, one's preferences and priorities can easily be left out of the picture.

And of course in the postnatal world Alana was just as wonderful. She worked with us on practical topics like latching and sleep, but also placed a lot of emphasis on mom's experience and needs, and dad's too. Overall Alana brings a very well rounded perspective to doula work. She was a profoundly grounding and supportive presence who felt like an old friend right away.”

“Alana was my birth doula for my son's birth in August of 2021. Alana is caring, thoughtful, and organized. As part of her package she provided several pre-birth sessions where we discussed all the ins and outs of the birth, what to expect, pain management techniques, what to consider if things don't go to plan (very important!), and how to manage working with hospital staff.

During the birth planning stage, Alana provided caring, judgement-free advice and insights. A birth plan should always be flexible and Alana created a safe space where I felt I could plan my ideal birth while also knowing that I was free to change my mind if needed. I had interviewed several birth doulas prior to selecting Alana and her acknowledgement of the uncertainty of birth and judgement free attitude is ultimately why I chose her to be my birth doula.

Ultimately, my actual birth was very different from our planned birth. With a baby 10 days overdue who failed to drop into my pelvis my plan for a natural, unmedicated birth slowly unfolded into days of labor, an epidural, and an unplanned c-section. Despite all the changes (and us being stuck in triage for 4 hours), Alana provided ongoing support however she could even when she wasn't allowed with us in the triage room. The nurses at the hospital loved working with her and made several comments about how wonderful she was during our stay. During the pushing phase, she provided thoughtful and calm direction on positions I could leverage to move the baby along. She is very observant and would notice when the nurses or midwife were being too aggressive and made sure to check in with me to see if I would like her to ask them to give me space.

Alana was truly wonderful and provided such needed support to me and my husband before and during our birth. I highly recommend her!”

“What drew me to choosing Alana as my doula for my first pregnancy was her kind and calm demeanor, as well as her passion for her craft.

My goal was to have an unmedicated birth, and this was during the pandemic, so there was a lot to worry about! Fortunately, Alana's patience and reassurance during all our prenatal visits helped calm my anxiety. I think her balance of supporting my birth plan as well as making sure I was informed of the options that might be offered to me at the hospital was extremely helpful because it made all the unknowns known and that was empowering.

In addition to providing emotional support, she educated me about the stages of labor, and what happens during delivery - these are important things to know! She is very knowledgeable about techniques to help navigate the discomfort of pregnancy through each trimester. She gave me tips on exercises and stretches to help prepare my body for the big day.

Although I could’ve found all this information by researching and reading on my own, it was extremely reassuring to have Alana talk me through it all. She did such a great job coaching me and my husband during those prenatal visits, that when it came to the big day, I basically labored and delivered on my own! I really think all of her guidance gave me the confidence I needed. Thank you, Alana!”

“I am so glad I found Alana as my doula and would highly recommend her. She is such a great listener and genuinely wants to understand you and your desires, hopes, and fears about birth. I had a lot of fun discussing all that with her. She is so knowledgeable and can help you navigate any of your concerns and decisions around your birth. Her personality is someone you want in your birth process. So positive, calming, understanding, and just a cool person in general.

I had a home birth which she was an awesome presence at, but I could tell based on our conversations that if a hospital had become necessary that she could also navigate that very well. It gave me confidence to know my bases were covered.Birth can be unpredictable, but knowing I had a solid partner on my side with Alana made me rise to the challenge with confidence and feeling cared for.”

“I loved working with Alana as my doula during delivery and postpartum. Alana gave me exercises and information to prep, massaged my back and legs during active labor, and helped me convince my doctor for more time when the hospital pushed us towards a C section -- I didn't end up having one, I had a vaginal birth and got to touch my baby's head as he entered the world! Then when we returned home from the hospital, Alana came to our home and helped me build my confidence with latching. Alana provided a framework for our family to process and feel present during these first tender moments with our son. I also liked that Alana told me when she had the answers and sometimes suggested I ask our Pediatrician about questions I had. A team of support is so helpful as a new mom! I'm so grateful Alana helped us during this time of transition for our family.”

“My husband and I had a wonderful experience working with Alana. She is very laid back and easy to talk to while also being super knowledgeable and attentive.

I wasn't sure if I was going to try to have a natural birth or get an epidural and I felt like Alana was ready to support me no matter what option I wound up choosing. Also, my husband tends to be very anxious around any medical or hospital setting so we weren't sure if he would be able to be with me for all of labor and delivery. Our meeting before birth was great because Alana was able to listen to his concerns and talk him through what L&D would be like so he wouldn't be so nervous.

We only wound up being able to have one pre-birth meeting because my baby decided to show up 6.5 weeks early! Thankfully, Alana was able to meet us at the hospital within an hour of my husband calling her (around 3am??). My labor proceeded very quickly and we were both overwhelmed because we had not anticipated having our baby that early. Alana remained a calm and consistent presence throughout my labor and for a while after delivery after they took my baby to the NICU. She was also able to ask the nurses and doctors questions we had completely forgotten to ask and kept us up to date with everything that was happening. My husband wound up being able to stay for most of L&D and I think a lot of that has to do with Alana being there - we both felt fully supported the entire time.

We had three postpartum sessions with Alana and they were also incredibly helpful. I would definitely recommend her to others and would love to work with her again if we wind up having another baby (hopefully closer to my due date next time, hehe)!”

“Alana is amazing. I unexpectedly went into labor 5 weeks early. I was NOT emotionally prepared for that to happen. I had just had my baby shower 4 days before! Suddenly I was in labor, and then had the world's fastest labor, where the baby came about 7 hours after the very beginnings of contractions had started. I would have completely panicked if not for Alana. She was there to make sense and bring calm to whole scene. She made sure that everything the medical staff said made sense to me. The labor moved too quickly for me to get an epidural, and she massaged my back which was extremely helpful with the pain. Even the medical staff seemed shocked by how quickly the baby came. She was a calming presence for my husband who was also stressed with how rapidly everything progressed. Our once premie baby is now a huge chubby cutie. He didn't need any special (ICU) care and we were out of the hospital within 2 days after a wild ride. We will always be grateful for Alana.”

“I wasn’t too familiar with doula support when I first met Alana, but after our first phone call I was sold. I could tell she was passionate about her work and really wanted every mother to feel supported. She provided useful education for both myself and partner that helped ease our anxieties and made us feel more confident for birth and parenthood. She was a big help in the hospital and having her continuous care and attention really made all the difference. She tended to my every need and always made sure I was comfortable and taken care of. She provided hands on support and also helped me talk through how I was feeling and my thoughts throughout my labor. She helped me understand what was happening by explaining what the doctors were saying and suggesting. I can’t imagine how lost I would have felt without her. If you are considering hiring a doula, I highly recommend Alana.”

“I am so grateful I had Alana’s support for the birth of my second child. After the birth of my first child did not go as I anticipated, I had a lot of fear and doubt going into my second pregnancy. Alana provided so much knowledge about birth and helped me understand it from a completely new point of view. She worked with me very patiently and attentively to provide care that was just right for me and my situation. I don’t know what I would have done without her support. She was definitely a great asset to my birth! Thank you Alana!”

-Sandra, Dan, & baby Allison

“From the moment you start talking anything birth/baby with Alana, you can tell she is passionate about her work.  Her cool and collected presence in the face of a situation that could potentially be extremely overwhelming (especially to a first time mom!) was exactly what I needed to calm my nerves. Alana was patient and unbiased in listening to my wants and needs when it came to my pregnancy and birth, and did her due diligence in making me feel empowered in those things. She armed me with knowledge and tools that helped me feel informed and more relaxed leading up to birth. Alana was also on top of making sure we had catch up appointments when I was scatterbrained and couldn’t keep track of much of anything.

I would absolutely recommend Alana to anyone looking to hire a doula!”
